T

he Pekanbaru Police are investigating allegations of sexual abuse and assault involving university students during a rally in front of the Riau Legislative Council in Pekanbaru, Riau, on Monday.

The rally, held to commemorate National Farmers Day, was attended by thousands of university students who clashed with security personnel after they tried to enter the compound.

The police said the students molested seven on-duty policewomen during the altercation.

“When they tried to force their way through the blockade, the protestors faced the policewomen, who were the first layer of security,” Pekanbaru Police chief Sr. Comr. Susanto said on Tuesday as quoted by kompas.com. “At that point, the university students molested and assaulted the policewomen, who were securing the demonstration.”

Susanto said some of the policewomen fainted, experienced chest pains and sustained injuries to their lips, arms and legs.

“The injured policewomen were taken to the hospital,” he said, adding that the case was being investigated.

Meanwhile, Riau University student president Randi Andiyana said seven protestors had been injured in the clash.

“One Riau Muhammadiyah University student is in the hospital,” he said. “We have lodged a report.” (kmt/swd)
