Indonesia has won two gold medals at The Belt and Road International Climbing Master Tournament 2018 in Huaian, China.
The Indonesian Sports Climbing Federation (FPTI) said in a statement sent to The Jakarta Post that the victory was dedicated to victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Central Sulawesi.
Pangeran Septo Wibowo clocked in a time of 6.33 seconds in the final round of the men’s speed event to win the gold. Pangeran outclassed Rukin Sergei of Russia. Indonesian Sabri snatched the bronze medal after crushing compatriot Muhammad Inayah.
Meanwhile, 2018 Asian Games gold medalist Aries Susanti Rahayu was the fastest in the women’s speed final with a time of 7.93 seconds, defeating He Cuilian of China, who managed 8.86 seconds. Indonesian Agustina Sari nailed the bronze after outclassing compatriot Nurul Iqamah.
Indonesian coach Hendra Basir said Indonesia sent Aspar Jaelolo, Alfian M. Fajri, Sabri, Hinayah, Veddriq Leonardo, Pangeran, Puji Lestari, Aries, Rajiah Sallsabillah, Agustina and Nurul to the event in China.
FPTI president Faisol Riza said competing at international events was crucial for his climbers to maintain their level for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
“We’re heading to the 2020 Olympics and we don’t have much time to prepare, especially as the government has not set the national training camp for the Tokyo event just yet.
“Participating in international competitions like the one in China are a perfect opportunity for the athletes to maintain their performance,” said Faisol.
