Economy in brief: JNE adopts cloud technology

span>Courier service and logistics company Tiki Jalur Nugraha Ekakurir (JNE) has adopted cloud management technology to provide more accurate delivery information to its customers.

“When people purchase an item from an online shop and they trust us to deliver it, they wonder when the package will arrive and where the package is. Information about that is very important for customers,” said JNE’s director Chandra Ferita in a recent press conference.

JNE’s vice president for technology Arief Rahardjo said with cloud management provided by Oracle — a cloud computing provider — JNE would improve its trace and tracking feature that the company already had before.

“With Oracle Management Cloud, information for customers will be more complete — what time our courier will arrive and their location. Customers will get notifications about the package’s status through the JNE app,” he said. Currently, JNE delivers around 20 million packages every month. Packages purchased through e-commerce alone make up around 60 percent of all JNE’s deliveries.

The total value of e-commerce transactions in Indonesia reached US$35 billion in 2017, up from $25 billion in 2016. The Communications and Information Ministry estimated the value to reach $130 billion in 2020.

To increase its logistics service capacity amidst the e-commerce boom, Arief said JNE was also preparing several strategic plans — establishing mega-hub automation, adopting blockchain and implementing AI-based delivery operation.
