he heavy rains that have hit West Sulawesi in the past three days caused a number of landslides along the main road connecting Mamasa and Mamuju regencies on Sunday night. The limited amount of heavy equipment in the region has slowed down the process of removing the debris from the road.
As a result, hundreds of motorists and motorcyclists trapped between the landslide spots have had to stay overnight on the road. Meanwhile, thousands of others intent on reaching the other respective regency have formed a line snaking down the road.
A motorist from Mamuju named Patris said he slept in his car while waiting for the heavy equipment to remove the landslide debris from the road.
“I have been stuck here since 10 p.m. [on Sunday] until now,” he said on Monday morning, as quoted by kompas.com.
Patris said before reaching the particular spot where he had become stuck, he had passed by a number of small landslides.
