he South Sumatra capital of Palembang will open the Musi IV Bridge in November. The bridge, is earthquake-proof will connect two areas of the city separated by the iconic Musi River.
Kiagus Syaiful Anwar, the head of the National Road Body (BBPJNV) overseeing the region, said the main span of the bridge had been constructed using the extradosed method, which combines the main elements of a prestressed box girder bridge and a cable-stayed bridge.
“The bridge can last for up to 100 years and it is more resistant to earthquakes,” Kiagus said, adding that the method was also suitable for rivers on which there were frequent cruises like the Musi.
He added that the constructor had also applied technology to monitor the bridge’s condition remotely, called the structural health monitoring system.
State-owned construction company PT Adhi Karya has nearly completed the construction as the two parts of the bridge were connected over the weekend. The Public Works and Housing Ministry said the bridge would be inaugurated by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in November.
The bridge will offer alternative access to people crossing the Musi River. To date, motorists and motorcyclists rely on the Ampera Bridge, another city icon. Authorities will conduct a traffic feasibility test on roads leading to the bridge.
Palembang Mayor Fitrianti Agustinda said the bridge would help the local economy. “A well-connected transportation [system] will contribute to the city’s development.”
