Algeria shares Indonesia’s views on how to resolve the Palestine-Israel conflict, Algerian Ambassador to Indonesia Aziria Abdelkader said on Friday evening in Jakarta.

“At the international level, Algeria and Indonesia share the same view and same position on several issues, mainly the Palestinian one,” he said during the celebration of the 64th anniversary of the Algerian Revolution.

Energy and Mineral Resources Deputy Minister Arcandra Taher was the event’s guest of honor. Deputy Foreign Minister AM Fachir was also in attendance.

The Algerian Revolution began on Nov. 1, 1954, and lasted seven years, resulting in the expulsion of French colonialists who had occupied the country for 132 years.

In a prepared speech, a copy of which was sent to The Jakarta Post over the weekend, Abdelkader quoted Algerian Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel, who before the United Nation’s 73th General Assembly reiterated Algeria’ position on the Palestine-Israel conflict, saying, “Algeria is convinced that only a solution based on international legality and the recognition of the imprescriptible national rights of the Palestinian People, including their rights to establish an independent state with El Qods El Charif as its capital can put an end to the conflict that has torn the Middle East for seven decades.”

Abdelkader also highlighted bilateral cooperation, adding that a second joint commission would be held in the near future.

Jakarta, he said, had shown its interest in taking part in development in Algeria, as demonstrated by the visit of Public Works and Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono on Sept. 24.

During the visit, Basuki met with his Algerian counterpart M. Abdelwahid Tammar and discussed ways and means to develop cooperation in the field of housing, urban development and cities, the ambassador said.

In October, Algerian officials and businesspeople attended the Trade Expo Indonesia in Jakarta. During the event, two memorandums of understanding were signed, respectively, by the Algerian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CACI) and the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), as well as the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Skikda province, Algeria, and its counterpart from Riau.

Abdelkader said more than 600 business visas and 600 working visas had been granted to Indonesians.

“In the cultural sector, 53 young Indonesian students are now in Algeria receiving four years of Islamic training,” he added.

Both countries have also cooperated on interreligious matters with representatives of the Algerian Islamic High Council participating in the 7th World Peace Forum in Jakarta in August.

On the sidelines of the event, Algeria signed a letter of intent to express its aim to boost bilateral relations in the field of the middle path as a solution to the crises of world civilizations. (agn)
