Seen through real-time CCTV footage, two women equipped with iron crowbars smashed glass bottles, a television and a printer within the confines of a tiny, white-painted room.
Shards of glass and plastic casings flew through the air, while the banging noise of their pent up frustrations could be heard from the other room.
The scene, however, was not that of a crime. The two women, Juyeong, 29, and Sina, 28, South Korean nationals who have lived in Jakarta for few months, were releasing their tension at the Temper Clinic, a rage room in Kemang, South Jakarta.
“Now I feel so much more relieved after smashing and destroying things,” Juyeong told The Jakarta Post after her session on Saturday.
Sherly Budi Kusuma, one of the founders of the clinic, said she and two friends had created the rage rooms to give Jakartans the chance to release their bottled up anger and frustrations in a safe and private environment.
“Growing up in Jakarta, I am familiar with vandalized public facilities. As you know, not a single public telephone booth in the city works because they have all been vandalized,” she said.
“Maybe humans have a tendency to destroy things. The Temper Clinic provides a safe and closed room for people who feel that urge.”
Customers can book a rage room through the clinic’s Instagram account @temperclinic.id, WhatsApp number or the Traveloka booking app. It also welcomes walk-in customers.
The venue is open seven days a week, including public holidays, from 11 a.m to 11 p.m.
Before venting their anger, customers must first read and sign the clinic’s terms and conditions, then put on a safety jumpsuit, two layers of gloves, rubber boots, a surgical mask, goggles and a helmet.
They are then led to a rage room, where breakable items and crowbars await.
“For single players we provide 10 glass bottles to destroy, while for double players we provide 20,” Sherly said.
A 15-minute session for a single customer costs Rp 125,000 (US$8.36), while pairs can have a 20-minute rage session for Rp 200,000.
Customers can request additional breakable items, such as a cathode-ray tube (CRT) television for an extra Rp 75,000 and a printer for Rp 50,000.
Each item offers five minutes of extra rage-time.
“However, most customers feel satisfied and exhausted before the 15 minutes are up,” Sherly said. “This is really a physical exercise for anger management.”
The clinic has three rage rooms measuring 4.2 meters by 2.4 m that can hold two people.
To prevent self-harm or participants from turning on each other, the door to every room has been modified so that they cannot be locked from the inside.
A CCTV camera is also installed in every room so that the clinic’s staff can monitor the customers’ safety from the reception area.
“We also record the footage and send it to customers if they want it,” said clinic cofounder Yanuarius Gavin Purwanto.
After its grand opening in August, it has catered to at least 20 customers per week.
According to Yanuarius, most customers come after working hours or during the weekend.
“Mostly, our customers are young workers aged 20 to 30 years old,” Yanuarius said.
He added that the clinic welcomed more female customers than men.
As for the breakable items, the venue depends on used bottle suppliers from Garut, West Java and used electronics suppliers from across Jakarta.
“As for the debris, we still depend on the neighborhood waste facility. However, we also keep some of it and turn the pieces into a background for photo sessions, because our customers like to take pictures [after their rage room experience],” Sherly said.
