T

wo died after a two-meter-high and 18-meter-long concrete wall at SD 141 state elementary school in Pekanbaru, Riau, collapsed on dozens of students and parents who were dropping off their children at school on Wednesday morning.

Rahma, 32, who was among the injured, was dropping off her child when the incident happened. She said the wall had been leaning days before the incident and there had been a warning sign on the wall saying that the wall could collapse at any time.

“But I guess I was already used to the leaning wall so I didn’t care about the warning,” she said.

Rahma received wounds to her head and legs that were caused by glass shards from seven motorcycles that had been crushed under the wall.

Pekanbaru Police chief Sr. Comr. Susanto said Yanitra Octavizola, 17, and William Maleaki, 7, were both killed in the incident.

William was a student at the school, while Yanitra was a student at SMA 14 state high school, who was dropping off her brother Rasyad Agus Trion, 11.

Rasyad survived the incident with light injuries.

“Both Yanitra and William passed away after being in critical condition and treated at Syafira Hospital,” Susanto said.

Susanto said they were still investigating the case to determine whether there had been any negligence that resulted in the fallen wall, which was renovated in 2016. (hol)
