T

he South Tangerang Police have caught three people suspected of being part of a gang of motorcycle thieves known to operate in Bintaro, South Tangerang.

Two of the suspects are minors. "We arrested them on Nov. 13 at 4 p.m. in Ciputat," said South Tangerang Police crime head Adj. Comr. Alexander Yurikho as quoted by tempo.co.

Alex said the three were suspected of stealing a motorcycle in Bintaro Sector 7 at 3 a.m. earlier that day. One of the thieves allegedly pulled the victim, Tegar Riyanto, off the motorcycle. A second thief then threatened Tegar with a sharp weapon. Tegar gave up his motorbike and fled to a nearby police post.

"The [three suspects] then stole Tegar's motorcycle and attempted to sell it on Facebook for cash," said Alex. "One of our officers from the cybercrime unit tracked them down and pretended to be a buyer, which resulted in the arrest."

The suspects said that they planned to divide the money among them and use any remaining money to buy alcohol.

"They are being charged with Article 365 of the Criminal Code (KUHP), which carries a maximum punishment of 12 years in prison," said Alex.

"For the juveniles, we're working with the Banten Law and Human Rights Agency, the P2TP2A [Integrated Empowerment Center for Women and Children] and their parents to provide assistance during the investigation," he added. (vla)
