Island focus: 4 years sought for Johanes in PLTU case

P

rosecutors from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) have demanded that the Jakarta Corruption Court sentence businessman Johanes Budisutrisno Kotjo to four years in prison for alleged bribery in a graft case pertaining to the construction of a coal-fired power plant (PLTU) in Riau.

Johanes is alleged to have given Golkar Party lawmaker Eni Maulani Saragih and former social affairs minister Idrus Marham Rp 4.75 billion (US$328,255) in return for their help in pushing for the signing of a power purchase agreement between Johanes’ company and state-owned electricity firm PLN in relation to the construction of the PLTU.

“The money was given to influence Eni to help the defendant in getting the power plant project,” KPK prosecutor Ronald F. Worotikan read out the sentence demand on Monday.

Both Eni and Idrus are now suspects.

On Monday, prosecutors also rejected Johanes’ request to be named a justice collaborator in the case because they consider him to be one of the main perpetrators.

Johanes was not eligible for the justice collaborator status as he had failed to provide information about the roles of other actors in the case, KPK prosecutors said.

The indictment states that Eni, who at the time was treasurer of Golkar’s Munaslub (extraordinary national congress), allegedly asked Johanes for money to fund the Munaslub.

Johannes then allegedly gave Eni Rp 4 billion in two installments through his secretary.

The indictment further states that Johanes allegedly gave Eni an additional Rp 750 million, which Eni reportedly asked for to fund her husband’s campaign in Temanggung regency, Central Java.
