Greater Jakarta: Students hospitalized over expired drinks

E

ight elementary school students in Bekasi, West Java, were hospitalized after drinking expired milkshakes at the school’s cafeteria on Tuesday.

The students of Pengasinan II state elementary school in Rawa Lumbu subdistrict drank milkshakes during break and came down with stomach aches not long after, schoolteacher Tiur Basani Sihotang said.

“[The students] felt nauseous, had stomach aches and were vomiting. They said they bought the same drink,” Tiur said on Wednesday as reported by kompas.com.

East Bekasi Police chief Comr. Agung said the milkshake powder that was used as an ingredient in the drinks had expired in November 2018, according to the packages it came in.

He said the drink was sold at the cafeteria for Rp 3,000 (21 US cents) per cup. Five students bought the milkshakes and shared them with three other students.

Jaelani, one of the student’s parents, said his child looked healthy during breakfast at home.

He expressed relief after his child received treatment at Hosana Medica Hospital.

The school’s lawyer, Samuel Stefen, said the cafeteria seller said several boxes of milkshake powder were purchased from another seller who offered the product at a low price.

“The seller sold five sachets without checking the expiry date,” he said.
