ASEAN and Switzerland reviewed their Sectoral Dialogue Partnership and cooperation on a range of issues, such as the digital revolution, climate change, and disaster risk management at the third meeting of the Joint Sectoral Cooperation Committee on Tuesday. The meeting also highlighted possible future initiatives.
Switzerland’s Assistant State Secretary for Asia and Pacific Ambassador Raphael Nägeli highlighted Switzerland’s commitment to supporting ASEAN in various fields, including vocational training, sustainable development and human security.
Ambassador Nägeli underlined the recent regional conference on reducing youth unemployment in November, in which Switzerland and the International Labor Organization presented a landmark report on labor market policies in ASEAN. The conference also analyzed how to create more and better jobs in small and medium enterprises and how to train young professionals in view of the fourth industrial revolution.
Nägeli was accompanied by Switzerland’s Ambassador to Indonesia and ASEAN Kurt Kunz at the meeting.
The ASEAN-Swiss Partnership facilitated three key policy documents on social forestry and climate change, which were adopted by ASEAN ministers into the ASEAN Guidelines for Agroforestry Development, the ASEAN Guidelines on Promoting Responsible Investment in Food, Agriculture and Forestry and the ASEAN Multisectoral Framework on Climate Change.
Switzerland has supported ASEAN and its member states in disaster management and response throughout the year. Switzerland provided international assistance and emergency response worth Rp 49.5 billion (US$3.4 million) in response to natural disasters in Southeast Asia in 2018, including the earthquakes in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, and Palu, Central Sulawesi in Indonesia, the dam break in Laos, and typhoon Mangkhut in the Philippines.
