Island focus: Ma’ruf hurts ankle, takes campaign break

I

ndonesia’s biggest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama leader and vice-presidential candidate Ma’ruf Amin is taking a break from the campaign trail as a result of a leg injury.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s running mate said he had suffered a sprained ankle for some time and it had got worse recently after he made frequent trips across the country on his campaign.

The 75-year-old denied earlier reports that he had taken a campaign break after falling in a bathroom. “I would like to clarify that I did not fall in the bathroom. Falling in the bathroom is usually caused by a stroke. It’s not true,” he told reporters on Thursday at his house in Menteng, Central Jakarta, as quoted by kompas.com.

Ma’ruf admitted that he was thinner now because he was on a diet as suggested by doctors. “I was told I weighed 70 kilograms while my height is 156 centimeters. Too fat. I am on the diet to get slim, but I’m not sick.”

Zahrul Azhar As’ad, one of his followers and secretary general of the National Cleric-Student Network (JKSN), said Ma’ruf was recovering.

“This is a blessing in disguise. He can now take a break from the tight schedule of [visits] to areas across Indonesia,” said Zahrul.
