Speaking in a livestreamed press conference on Friday, Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Mahfud MD emphasized that the government had selected “credible” people in the selection committee, which will oversee the selection process to seek suitable candidates to serve in the General Elections Commission (KPU) and the Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu).

The tenure of current KPU commissioners and Bawaslu members is expected to end by April 11 next year.

Mahfud reassured that the government would remain neutral throughout the selection process and would remain impartial in the period leading up to the 2024 General Election, which will be held under the new KPU and Bawaslu leaderships.

"The government is determined to be completely neutral, fair and impartial in election matters," said Mahfud.

Mahfud also said the government’s recent moves, including setting up the 11-member selection committee and proposing election dates, reflected its desire to see the election held in 2024, as mandated by the existing laws.  

"With the government having assembled the KPU-Bawaslu selection committee and having been actively proposing an election date in 2024, the government's agenda is clear that the election must be held in 2024," he argued.
