Rendra to receive doctorate degree

ADPARA>YOGYAKARTA: Renowned poet W.S. Rendra is scheduled to receive a honorary doctorate degree from Yogyakarta's Gadjah Mada University (UGM) next week.

Head of UGM's public relations and protocol department, Suryo Baskoro, said the doctorate degree would be awarded during the university's open senate meeting next Tuesday.

"The degree is to be awarded to W.S. Rendra for outstanding achievements and dedication in the cultural field," Suryo told The Jakarta Post on Friday.

He said Rendra would be the 19th to receive such a degree from the university.

Separately, Rendra told the Post on the sidelines of a musical performance in Yogyakarta this week that when he received the degree he would deliver a speech he titled Megatruh Gambuh.

"I am thankful for the degree ... but what is more important for me is to keep working and creating," he said. -- JP/Sri Wahyuni
