KUPANG: A military task force arrested six residents of Silaman village in Belu, East Nusa Tenggara, on Wednesday for attempting to smuggle kerosene and gasoline into neighboring Timor Leste.
A member of the border security task force, Dharmawan, said Thursday the six suspects had been handed over to the local police for further investigation.
He said fuel smuggling was becoming increasingly common because of soaring fuel prices in Timor Leste.
"We have stopped dozens of fuel smuggling attempts in the past three months. Smugglers have formed groups in the illegal trade," he said.
He added the situation along the border remained calm despite the political instability following the recent attempt on the lives of the Timor Leste president and prime minister. --JP
