ADPARA>"Invest in Women and Girls," the theme of this year's International Women's Day, is generally interpreted as a call for financial assistance. But there are many other ways in which women can be empowered.
In rural districts, women are in weak positions, even when it comes to deciding where and how they will give birth. In one South Sulawesi district, however, traditional birthing attendants are being incorporated into health teams, providing women with more comprehensive care. The Jakarta Post's Emmy Fitri visited Takalar district late last month.
