Serpong to reopen 'unsafe' U-turns

TANGERANG: Police in Serpong confirmed Thursday they would reopen several U-turns that were closed after being blamed for a number of accidents along Jl. Raya Serpong in Tangerang.

The reopening of the U-turns is expected to reduce traffic congestion in nearby areas.

"We will reopen three U-turns located right in front of WTC Mall, Vila Melati Mas and As Sobirin Hospital in the near future," said the chief of the Serpong Police's traffic division, Second Insp. Sahabi.

He said police closed 12 out of 15 U-turns along the 12-kilometer road early last year because they were seen as having contributed to the high number of traffic accidents along the road.

Sahabi said in 2006 a total of 436 people were injured in accidents blamed at least partly on the U-turns.

To avoid future accidents, he said the Banten provincial and Tangerang regency administrations had agreed to build at least four pedestrians bridges in front of WTC Serpong, Pratama Abadi factory, As Sobirin Hospital and Plaza Serpong. --JP
