CIREBON, East Java: A stone mine collapsed at Gunung Kuda Hill in Cipanas village, Cirebon, on Monday, killing one miner and injuring 10 others. The miner killed was identified as a Muslim.

The wounded victims were rushed to nearby Arjawinangun and Gunung Jati hospitals. Most of them suffered from head and leg injuries.

Besides injuring the miners, the collapse also damaged three trucks and an excavator.

"The miners tried to save themselves when they heard the mine collapsing, but couldn't," said Carma, one of the local residents who witness the incident.

The evacuation of the victims took at least three hours as the ravine at the site is steep.

The police are investigating the case, but the collapse is believed to have been caused by strong water flow from heavy rain three days earlier.

"We're investigating the case to find the real cause of the collapse," said Adj. Comr. Asnawi, head of the local police post.

Asnawi said he already instructed miners to temporarily stop working at the hill to prevent further collapses. -- JP
