JAKARTA: Besides holding the regular Car Free Day, the city administration will drill biopore absorption holes in Semanggi Park this Sunday as part of efforts to improve environmental condition in the capital.
Head of the city's Environmental Management Board (BPLHD), Budirama Natakusumah, said the car-free zone would be extended to include Old Town in West Jakarta, along with the main thoroughfares of Jl. Jendral Sudirman and Jl. MH Thamrin in Central Jakarta, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
A biopore is a 30-centimeter diameter, one-meter deep hole in the ground filled with organic waste. The subsequent compost created in the hole absorbs water faster than normal soil.
"The biopore program is expected to reduce the volume of rainwater going into canals," Budirama said.
He said recent research showed that 500 biopores in Cipinang, East Jakarta, helped reduce standing water in the area. --JP
