PADANG, West Sumatra: West Sumatra Governor Gamawan Fauzi laid a cornerstone as construction began on a four-star hotel project, Best Western Basko Hotel, in Padang on Wednesday.

The hotel will be operated by the Best Western International network, a hotel group with the chain of 4,300 hotels worldwide.

The light-floor hotel with 180 rooms is expected to be completed within five months, said project director, Basrizal Koto.

"With our professionalism, hotel guests will find their stay very convenient," he said.

Gamawan said in his address the new hotel project was expected to attract more investors to do business in West Sumatra, especially Padang.

"The number of foreign tourists visiting West Sumatra is increasing. Last year alone the number reached 1.7 million," Gamawan said. He said the boost in tourism forced the province to improve its accommodation facilities.

This will be the fifth four-star hotel in West Sumatra, after Bumi Minang and Pangeran Beach Hotels in Padang and Novotel and Pusako in Bukittinggi. -- JP
