JAYAPURA, Papua: The Papua regency of Keerom saw more than 31,000 malaria cases in 2007, says a local health official.
"Malaria topped the list of the 10 biggest diseases in 2007, reaching 31,000 cases, more than respiratory diseases and elephantiasis " said Keerom Health Office head John Lopulalan on Friday.
The office has taken steps to curb malaria, such as providing regular treatment for sufferers at community health clinics and other medical facilities, he said.
"However, prevention of malaria should begin with hygienic surroundings, such as cleaning yards and burying objects that could hold water to prevent disease-carrying mosquitoes from breeding," he said.
This year Keerom regency will upgrade the Waris community health center to allow it to provide in-patient treatment by building nine wards capable of accommodating 100 patients. It will also upgrade four auxiliary clinics into community health centers.
Keerom has two clinics that provide in-patient treatment but does not have a hospital.
"The local administration should install contract medical workers, such as nurses, midwives and doctors, as full-fledged employees," said Lopulalan. -- JP
