JAKARTA: President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono ordered state officials to support and maintain a conducive political environment amid a series of gubernatorial and municipal/regency elections across Indonesia.

"I call on the police, military and all governmental institutions to remain neutral in elections and maintain security throughout," Yudhoyono said Monday at the State Palace.

"Let's build a good democracy in our country. There's no need to look back to the past when in elections neutrality was interfered with."

Yudhoyono reiterated that state officials, especially party members and those intending to run in regional elections, should remain focussed on doing their job for the community's sake.

"Should there be any disputes in elections, we should refer to regulations," he said. -- JP
