JAKARTA: Many workers in Indonesia are aware of their right to association but are not well-informed about labor law, a recent survey has found.
The study, conducted by the Indonesian Labor Research and International Labor Organization, found 80 percent of 114 respondents from 110 companies in Jakarta, Banten, West Java and East Java said they understood the freedom to form a union and negotiate with employers was protected under the law.
However, almost the same number said they did not know details of the law.
Some employers surveyed said they resisted unionization in their companies.
Many outsourced workers also were unaware of their rights, which are protected under Law No. 13/2003 on labor. However, one in three respondents was subject to a probation period of more than one month. -- JP
