JAKARTA: The Indonesian Military (TNI) has said it supports the proposal to try servicemen facing criminal charges in civilian courts rather than in the military court.
However, in a speech read by Air Force chief assistant Rear Marshal Wardjoko on Thursday, TNI chief Gen. Djoko Santoso said the government and the House of Representatives would have to amend the prevailing law on military tribunals before the TNI could submit to the civilian judicial system.
Djoko said the authority of military police to investigate criminal offenses involving military officers should stand despite the change.
The House and the government are currently amending the law on the military court, which human rights activists claim is an institution for protecting errant soldiers and preserving impunity. -- JP
