JAKARTA: General Elections Commission (KPU) chairman Abdul Hafidz Asyari met with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono here Friday to report on preparations for next year's general elections.

"To date some 69 political parties have taken election registration forms ...," Hafidz said.

Asked about the issue of political parties facing competing claims of leadership, Hafidz said the commission had discussed the problem with Justice and Human Rights Minister Andi Mattalata.

"We agreed that the legitimate party (that will be allowed to contest the elections) is the one which is registered with the ministry," Hafidz said.

Mattalata said he was not in a position to say if a particular party with dual leadership was legitimate, adding he would wait and see which party registered with his office.

Two factions of the fractured National Awakening Party (PKB) recently registered with the KPU for the 2009 elections.

One camp is under the control of former president Abdurrahman Wahid and the other is led by his nephew, Muhaimin Iskandar. --Antara
