JAKARTA: Berry Nahdian Furqon was elected Tuesday as the executive director of the Indonesian Environment Forum (Walhi) for the 2008-2012 period, replacing Chalid Muhammad.

Furqon collected 116 votes to beat out Farah Sofa, Nurhidayati and Slamet Daroyni, who received 100, 78 and 65 votes, respectively. The election capped the Walhi national congress held at the Gabusan arts center in the Yogyakarta regency of Bantul.

In his victory speech, Furqon called on the losing candidates to join with him in preserving Indonesia's environment. He pledged to set up communities concerned with environmental issues.

"Walhi has to return to the grassroots as our basis of support. Community groups are expected to raise public awareness about the environment," he said. -- JP
