Jakarta needs new penitentiary

JAKARTA: The administration plans to build a new penitentiary in Ciangir, Banten, to ease demands made on Cipinang Penitentiary in East Jakarta, which was designed to hold 1,500 people but is now home to almost 4,000.

City secretary Muhayat said the over loading was causing problems for the penitentiary officials.

"This results in the penitentiary missing out on its function of training and educating its inmates, so they are not becoming better people when they return to their lives outside of the prison," he said during the sidelines of a celebration of the penitentiary's 44th anniversary on Sunday. --JP
