TANGERANG: The Tangerang regency administration is making a list of public school buildings in need of repairs following the collapse of a building in Mauk district, Banten, that left hundreds of school children studying outside.

"I've ordered Education and Culture Agency head Achmad Suwandhi to check whether we have school buildings that are in decaying conditions," Tangerang Regent Ismet Iskandar said, as quoted by Antara.

Last week, Setia Bakti elementary school's building in Mauk district collapsed. Since then, 193 students have been learning outdoors.

Built in 1983, the elementary school's three buildings are dilapidated, hence considered unfit for studying. However, nothing had been done until the buildings collapsed.

The administration suspected there were more dilapidated school buildings in the regency.

Ismet said his administration would adjust the regency's budget to renovate the schools.

The Tangerang regency administration had already allocated Rp 50 million of its 2008 budget to renovate schools with damaged roofs. --JP
