JAKARTA: Transportation Agency officers and police held an illegal parking raid Monday on Jl. Pemuda, East Jakarta, resulting in a bajaj (three-wheeled pedicab) falling into Sunter River.

The sudden raid caused several bajaj drivers parked in a prohibited area to quickly flee. However, one bajaj fell into Sunter River as its driver tried to get away.

Abandoning his vehicle lying in the river, the bajaj driver quickly left the scene and was followed by the officers laughing behind him.

Budiyono, the operational head of the East Jakarta transportation subagency, said his office would hold parking raids regularly to keep the area free from illegal parking.

However, he added, his officers did not clamp any vehicles during Monday's raid as they found most cars had drivers inside. "We only gave them tickets," he said, as quoted by Beritajakarta.com.

During the raid, the officers issued tickets to 11 public transportation vehicles and four private vehicles.

Governor Fauzi Bowo said the city administration had asked the police and the Transportation Agency to prioritize the parking raid on busy roads, especially the roads alongside the busway lanes. -- JP
