JAKARTA: The national libraries of Indonesia and Australia renewed their cooperation agreement Tuesday, enabling them to lend each other materials on specific occasions.
"Our prized collection includes 10,000 old manuscripts written on palm leaves. If Australia holds a cultural exhibition on Asia or Indonesia, they can borrow them," Agus Sutoyo, from Indonesia's national library, said.
The agreement also allows the two parties to have materials on Indonesian issues published in both Indonesia and Australia.
"We can ship them local materials, and Australia will send us their materials on Indonesia, although they do not have as many as we do. They have published some interesting materials on Indonesia, both written texts and audio recordings," Agus said.
The memorandum of understanding was signed by National Library of Indonesia director Dady Rachmananta and National Library of Australia deputy director general Amelia McKenzie. Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Bill Farmer witnessed the signatures.
The previous agreement was signed in 2004. -- JP
