JAKARTA: A man returning from Malaysia, identified as Mohamad Ashar, 23, was found Thursday at dawn lying unconscious on Jl. Dr. Supomo in Tebet, South Jakarta.
A patrolling police officer, Adj. First Insp. Mustakim, took him to the nearest health clinic.
After a medical examination, it was suspected the man had consumed chemicals in liquid form, leaving him unconscious. There was no indication of physical harm on his body, the clinic said.
Police investigations revealed the man was seen with two others on the street. Witnesses said the two other men left him and took his belongings.
Later, Ashar told Tempointeraktif.com, he came from Purworejo, Central Jakarta, and had just returned from working in Malaysia, carrying two cell phones, bank notes in rupiahs and ringgits, gold jewelry and two bank cards, which could access Rp 10 million (US$1,080).
Ashar said he met the men on his journey home. The three ate at a Tegal food stall and later the two offered him a herbal concoction, telling him it would relieve sore joints.
Before he was left unconscious, the two men managed to get the personal identification number for Ashar's bank cards. -- JP
