CIREBON, West Java: The government needs to work hard and have a serious attitude in dealing with problems burdening the community, says an influential Muslim cleric.

Speaking at Kempek Islamic Boarding School in Palimanan on Tuesday, KH Habaib Syarief Utsman Yahya of the country's largest Muslim organization, Nadhlatul Ulama (NU), said the biggest problem the government faced concerned fuel prices. The government is planning to hike the price of oil.

"It's a dilemma. The main problem is explaining to the community the plan will bring great advantage to the nation and not vice versa," Habaib said.

Habaib also called for the government to strengthen its solidity and unity in tackling problems to avoid any misperceptions among the community.

"The power must be effectively used for people's prosperity, otherwise, the government will only be seen as a failure," he added. -- JP
