JAYAPURA: Air Force soldiers were deployed to take over services at Frans Kaisieppo Airport in Biak when airport workers went on strike Thursday.
"Air Force soldiers took over security checks to prevent the strike from disrupting flight schedules," airport workers union chairman Primus Rahangiar said Thursday.
He said the strike took place from 6:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. East Indonesian Time, ending when management of state-owned Angkasa Pura I agreed to their demands for higher pay and better conditions.
The strike also won support from the Papuan Tribal Council in Biak, which warned management against dismissing striking workers. Fellow workers in North Sulawesi, East Kalimantan and South Sulawesi went on strike at the same time. --JP
