PADANG: The district attorney in Tuapejat, Mentawai regency, on Tuesday arrested the former head of the informal education section of the local education office, Yendri Kasrizal, for his alleged involvement in a Rp 600 million (US$63,800) graft case.

Yendri, now a teacher at state-run SMPN 1 Sioban in Sipora, was named a suspect Tuesday after undergoing five hours of questioning at the provincial prosecutor's office in the city.

Head of the Tuapejat Prosecutor's Office Undang Mungopal said the case dealt with an alleged embezzlement of Rp 606 million allocated for tutors and education programs in the regency's 2004 budget.

"We have calculated losses caused and have seized Rp 137 million from Yendri," said Undang, adding that his office would question other witnesses connected with the case. --JP
