JAKARTA: The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) will investigate former senior Home Ministry officials linked to graft cases involving the purchase of fire engines, the commission said Wednesday.

The fire engines were bought for several regional administrations at significantly marked up prices.

KPK deputy chairman Chandra Hamzah said the suspects would be investigated over the 2003 issuance of a memo appointing a private company as sole provider of the fire engines for the administrations.

"We suspect there is corruption involved here. We are compiling evidence from four other similar cases," he said.

Four people -- including former Medan mayor Abdillah and deputy mayor Ramli Lubis, former Pekanbaru mayor Saleh Jasit and Samarinda procurement chief Ismed Rusdiani -- are suspects in three of those cases.

In the fourth case, former Makassar mayor Amirruddin Maula was sentenced to five years in prison.-- JP
