JAKARTA: Copper and gold mining company PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (NNT) in Batu Hijau, West Nusa Tenggara, paid a total US$4.58 million in royalties to the government for this year's first quarter, a press release said Friday.

The payment, completed April 30, included $2.22 million for copper, $2.22 million for gold and the rest for silver.

The amount was 46.79 percent higher than the $3.12 million paid in the same period last year.

The company, a local subsidiary of giant U.S.-based Newmont Mining Corporation, began paying royalties to the government in 1999, when it first sent concentrate shipments. It has paid a total of $150.31 million in royalties.

The royalty payment was stipulated in the terms of the contract inked by NNT and the government. -- (rff)
