PADANG: The municipal branch of the General Election Commission (KPUD) in Sawahlunto will facilitate a quick vote count through the short message system (SMS) for the mayor election scheduled for Sunday.

Type "info" in your cellular phone and dial 081268777600, and you will obtain the local election's results. The SMS service will be available as of 16:30 West Indonesian Time, and the public could know the results, after 90 percent of the total votes are counted, that day.

KPUD chairman Syahril Stan said the quick count was one of the services provided by the election commission to the public so people can know who won the mayor vote on balloting day.

He said the quick count service was given by the election commission in cooperation with CV Riau Trust Company and Sawahlunto Cultural Center.

Incumbent mayor Fauzi Hasan, his running mate Mardi and two other pairs are contending the mayor race.

The manual count, deployed by the KPUD, takes at least three days to know up to 70 percent of the total votes in local elections.

So far, quick count has been conducted by the Indonesian Survey Institute, Indonesian Survey Circle, Kompas daily and several other third parties. It was applied for the first time in the 2004 presidential election. --JP
