Indonesia sends aid to China

JAKARTA: Indonesia sent humanitarian aid to earthquake victims in Shichuan, China, on Friday using two airplanes from the Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in East Jakarta.

An Air Force' C-130 Hercules transport aircraft from the 31st transportation squadron is carrying 215 platoon tents weighing some 12,300 kilograms. The squadron is led by Lt. Col. Isep Hasan Isroni.

Megantara Air's Boeing 727-200 is carrying five tons of medicines, packed food, disinfectant and water.

"We will also send 20 medics and 40 search and rescue members to China as requested by the Chinese government," the national disaster relief agency chairman Syamsul Ma'arif said.

"We hope that our aid will be useful to relief efforts following the earthquake."

Chinese deputy chief of mission to Jakarta, Yang Li Jiu, expressed gratitude on behalf of the Chinese government.

"We thank the Indonesian government for sending aid to China, despite also suffering from numerous disasters at home," he said.
