JAKARTA: Around 1,500 teachers filed a report at City Police headquarters on Jl. Sudirman, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, demanding the city administration employ them as full-time civil servants.
"The administration hasn't paid our salaries since January. I receive a monthly allowance of Rp 100,000 (US$10.70) from a foundation at my school," said Risnah, 38, a teacher at Kuntum Mekar School for the Disabled in West Jakarta.
She said some of the city's 6,500 temporary teachers had been promised permanent employment as civil servants by 2007 and 2008.
"I hope those responsible in the administration open their eyes and think about our condition. Most contract teachers in other municipalities have already been promoted to civil servant status," she said. -- JP
