JAKARTA: Indonesia will host the ninth International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP) in Bali from August 9 to 13 next year.

AIDS Society of Asia and the Pacific (ASAP) president Myung-Hawan Cho said Friday the ICAAP would promote new ways of curbing the HIV epidemic in Asia and Pacific countries.

"We are seeking support for finding ways of empowering people of Pacific Island countries and creating a much stronger bridge between Asia and the Pacific," Cho said after a ceremony at the office of chief welfare minister Aburizal Bakrie.

Congress committee chairman Zubairi Djoerban said participants in attendance were expected to actively share their experiences in handling HIV/AIDS cases in their countries.

"We hope all participants will share ideas about best practice and innovative skills in the biennial congress. We also encourage paramedics, women and youth to submit abstracts about HIV/AIDS," he said.

"We also want Pacific countries such as Fiji and Papua New Guinea to take an active part in the five-day international meeting." -- JP
