Photo exhibition takes to the street

More than twenty photographers including Revi Mascot have chosen to celebrate Jakarta's 481st anniversary on Sunday with a street photo exhibition.

The exhibition differs from the usual glamorous gallery art events. The organizers have hung photos on deserted walls on the east side of Cikini railway station, Central Jakarta. The walls are called Bautanah Gallery, meaning a gallery that smells like soil.

When the exhibition opened on Friday, there was no wine to be drunk and no snacks to eaten. If guests were thirsty or peckish, they could purchase a bottle of tea or plate of chicken noodles from nearby street vendors.

Photographers whose works are being exhibited range from professionals to amateurs to beginners. The exhibition is open to submissions from June 20 to 23.

"The number of photographs has increased steadily after the opening," Revi said. "Those wanting to join the exhibition just need to bring their prints here and we'll make frames for them."

Revi will accept any photos depicting Jakarta in the past.

Titled "Jakarta Kemarin" (Jakarta Yesterday), the exhibition shows various photos of Jakarta in times gone by.

One of the many photographs displayed captures legendary boxer Muhammad Ali riding a becak during his visit to the city in 1973.

Another photo shows a man washing his face with water from a heavily polluted river.
