JAKARTA: The General Elections Commission (KPU) has yet to complete a set of party regulations for next year's legislative elections, even though the official campaigning period begins next week.

The commission said it would soon finalize the guidelines, which include regulations on funding and political parties.

KPU member Sri Nuryanti said Saturday the commission will hold a series of meetings from June 30 to July 2 to finalize the regulations.

"We are in the process of finishing the guidelines for political parties' campaign funds, including financial sources, reports and sanctions for those violating the guidelines. We are very careful in our creation of the guidelines," said Sri.

During the meetings, the KPU will also discuss the results of a factual verification process conducted by local elections commissions across the country.

The KPU is slated to publicly announce which parties are eligible to contest the election on July 5.

The legislative election campaign period runs from July 8, 2008, to April 2, 2009. -- JP
