Vendors rally in front of Carrefour office

JAKARTA: The Jakarta Society Alliance (Amarta) that consists of traditional market merchants from Muara Karang market, North Jakarta, staged a rally in front of retailer Carrefour's main office in Lebak Bulus, South Jakarta, on Monday afternoon.

They demanded the company close its outlet in Megamal Pluit, North Jakarta, as they said it violated a presidential decree on the distance between modern shops, shopping centers and traditional markets.

"The distance between the Carrefour branch in Megamal Pluit is only 1.5 kilometers from Muara Karang traditional market," said Amarta head M Rico Sinaga as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

The group believes Carrefour harms the traditional merchants, and demanded the branch be relocated. --JP
