Depressed teacher commits suicide

YOGYAKARTA: A senior high school teacher in Yogyakarta killed himself Thursday morning because he was depressed as his child had been in an accident which had required expensive medical care.

Puji Widodo, 57, a resident of Salakan hamlet, Bangunharjo village, Sewon district, Bantul regency was found in his home by one of his relatives.

The relative, Suryani, 38, said she had gone to his house to meet him and had become curious when she found all the doors still closed. She then asked Puji's neighbor, Waluyo, to check on him.

"When Waluyo climbed on the roof of Puji's house, he found Puji hanging in his room," Suryani said, who then immediately reported the incident to the police.

Some days prior to the incident, Puji had seemed depressed as his child had undergone expensive medical treatment in a hospital after having an accident, Suryani said.

Separately, Sewon district police chief Adj. Comr. Triyadi said Puji had committed suicide.

"The police examined his body and found no signs of violence. So, his death is considered a suicide," Triyadi said, adding that the body had been given to the family for burial. --JP
