Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo called on Jakarta residents to love the capital city, which celebrated its 482nd anniversary on Monday.
"This is important, otherwise Jakarta will be suffering," he was quoted by Kompas.com as saying.
He said it would be easier to build Jakarta into a better city if the residents strongly attached to the city.
Fauzi also said all elements in the society should learn from the past to avoid any mistakes in the future.
Earlier this month, the governor admitted that he had yet to provide a good transportation system in the city to ease severe traffic jam.
Other problems such as floods and poor public infrastructure have also plagued the city.
