  • It's a new day in Nias

    Mandrehe

Just when the world seemed to have forgotten about the Asian tsunami,
an earthquake hit Nias, a small island off Aceh, on March 28, 2005. The
extraordinary images that came out of Nias in the aftermath of the
disaster and during reconstruction shaped its visual identity over time.

  • More than two years on, in Nov. 2007, after a less powerful earthquake, Risang Yuwono, a photography student at the Jakarta Instute of the Arts, set foot on Nias for the first time. Not wanting his work to conform to a preconceives image of the island, Risang tried to forget the pictures he had seen in coffee-table books, on postcards and in magazines. his photographs give us a broader look at Nias as a landscape that is rich in aesthetic and human diversity.
