It is true that cycling can be a difficult activity to do on a daily basis in Jakarta because of the unfavorable traffic, but a biking event on Sunday, June 7 to mark Environment Day, was able to attract some 3,500 cyclists.

"We joined this event out of solidarity with other cyclists and because we wanted to make more friends," said Donny, a participant. "It's healthy, too."

He called on the government and other social organizations to hold more events to make cycling more popular in Jakarta.

"On Sunday, we can ride our bikes in Jakarta quite easily, but it's still hard to cycle every day as we compete with cars and motorcycles. We also find it difficult to park,” he said. “But we have to start doing more cycling and encourage more people to do so, as it is healthy and environmentally friendly."

Donny was one of the participants, ranging from children to teenagers, men to women, who all departed from the Bung Karno Stadium parking lot, South Jakarta and cycled to the National Monument, Central Jakarta, a total distance of about six kilometers.
