The annual Siti Nurbaya Festival returns for the fifth time in Taman Muaro Lasak, Padang, West Sumatra, until Sept. 10.

Traditional activities and competitions are among the event's highlights, such as teh talua (egg tea) making, maelo pukek (pulling the nets), panjat pinang (pole climbing), selaju sampan (boat racing) and boat decorating competition. The festival also features carnivals and a community gathering.

Festival committee' spokesperson Feri Ferdiansyah told The Jakarta Post Tuesday that the event aimed to promote Padang to domestic and foreign tourists. “We want to introduce Padang’s culture and attract as many people as possible to come here."

Feri said the festival aimed to preserve Minang's ethnic culture. “Nowadays, children are more interested in playing with their gadgets and all. Meanwhile, our culture is actually very rich,” he said.

The festival has been held since 2011. In addition to the aforementioned competitions, this year's event also engages netizens through social media to boost promotion. (kes)
