The Tourism Ministry is bringing summer to London, United Kingdom, with Indonesia Weekend that is going to be held from July 22 to 23 at the Potter’s Field Park.
With a mission to promote Indonesia as a warm destination, the 6,200-meter park that is located not far from the Tower Bridge and the Tower of London is set to be transformed into a beach party equipped with 50 tons of white sand and beach huts and boasts Indonesian tropical drinks, banana boat and surfing simulator.
It will also host an exhibition that will occupy up to 180 meters area of the park.
“Potter’s Field Park is a very strategic location to promote the Wonderful Indonesia brand. Hopefully this event can attract the Londoners' attention. On weekends, the park is usually passed through by at least 70,000 people,” said Tourism Minister Arief Yahya.
Former MasterChef Indonesia judge chef Degan Septoadji reportedly would demonstrate how to cook rendang (beef simmered in coconut milk and spices), soto Betawi (Betawi-style beef aromatic soup) and gado-gado (Indonesian salad with peanut sauce) at the event.
Meanwhile, an Indonesia pavilion is set to showcase carnival from Malang Flower Carnival and a VR experience.
“There’ll be music performance from DJ Allfy Rev who is going to bring a modern twist into Indonesian songs, as well as Jei Angklung, Topeng and Jaipong traditional dance performances,” said the ministry's deputy assistant for Europe, the United States, Middle East and Africa Tourism Promotion, Nia Niscaya.
The event will also host pop up boutiques from Dauky and Elzatta by Elhijab and Indonesian Fashion Chambers, as well as a fashion show.
“Other than that, there’ll be a performance of pencak silat mixed with hip hop music, henna artist and mural artist,” Nia added.
The ministry also invites three local operators, namely Kuoni Travel, Ethos Travel and Dive Worldwide, to promote travel packages to Indonesia.
Last year’s Indonesia Weekend managed to attract more than 30,000 visitors, of which 72.4 percent were from British, 24.7 percent from other nationalities and 2.9 percent were Indonesians.
Last year's event featured 53 stalls and 500 minutes of performances at the main stage and reportedly sold more than 6,000 sate ayam (chicken skewers).
The number of European tourists who visited Indonesia last year reached one million, of which 230,000 were from the UK.
For this year, the English market is targeting to contribute 384,000 tourists to Indonesia. (kes)
